Blog 19: Independent Component 2

LITERAL

(a) Write: “I, Justine Solorio, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 31 hours of work.”

(b) Cite your source regarding who or what article or book helped you complete the independent component.
I mentored with different detectives but all under Sgt. Saldecke's approval. I also mentored with Sgt. Alvarez.

(c) Update your hours in your Senior Project Hours link. Make sure it is clearly labeled with hours for individual sessions as well as total hours.
My mentorship hours log is completely updated.

(d) Explain what you completed.
I just did extra mentorship hours by going to the station and mentoring with different sergeants and detectives. I also spent quite a large amount of time with a dispatcher who used to work in forensic science and in the crime lab. I did an interview with him as well for personal records.

INTERPRETIVE

Defend your work and explain its significance to your project and how it demonstrates 30 hours of work. Provide evidence (photos, transcript, art work, videos, etc) of the 30 hours of work.
I was able to work with law enforcement officials which gave me the sense of feeling like it was I who was doing the investigations. It was the kind of experience and feeling that absolutely no book nor article could give me the feeling. It impacted the outlook of my educational future as well as my career.

I was able to work alongside these law enforcement officials and see what they do on the day to day basis and not whats primarily publicized. Meeting with Sgt. Alvarez especially helped because he had experience working in the crime lab with a forensic science background which is what I might be interested from here on out. These 38 hours were probably of the most enlightening throughout my entire senior project because it showed me that I don't think I want to be work on a federal level anymore. The hours the detectives for LASD do are extensive enough and I can only imagine investigation on a federal level is that much more.

Blog 15: Independent Component 2 Approval

1.  Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.
I plan to create a profile on a fictional character. I will watch episodes of the certain characters I am creating a profile on and will base it off a real profile created by Special Agent Douglas on "Jack the Ripper."

2.  Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.
I will explain the episode or portion of what I watch and give a detailed description of what part of my profile it will support.

3.  Explain how this component will help you explore your topic in more depth.
It will allow me to exercise my profiling skills using the tools that have given to me by my intership, mentorship, and research I've conducted.

4.  Post a log in your Senior Project Hours link and label it "Independent Component 2" log.
Okay.

The identification of my whom I've done my additional component with is confidential. Releasing the name of him or his family would be a violation. However, in my evidence I refer to him as John Doe.

(d) Explain what you completed.
I spent 31 hours with a family whose father is a struggling addict on his road to recovery. He unfortunately relapsed toward the end of my time with them. I plan to still keep contact with this family.

I was able to see what drugs to do firsthand to addicts and their families. It helped me with the understanding of different mental states people enter and the mind altering affects. Just like drug addicts, serial killers enter a completely different state of mind. My mentorship as well as internship are part of the narcotics division so it helps me with my understanding of everything I do at internship. This experience has also furthered my knowledge within my internship, which would allow me to have more responsibility at my internship.

Blog 7: Independent Component 1 Approval

1. Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.
For my 30 hours of mentorship I plan to go to a shooting range with me mentor and learn how to shoot. He is a detective sergeant for LASD and he said he is trying to arrange shooting at the training center that detectives are sent to when first hired onto the department. Not only will I be learning how to shoot but I will learn how to handle a gun, I will be learning how to use it during several different scenarios. In addition, I plan on going on a ride along for an 8-hour shift.

2. Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.
For the shooting aspect of my independent component I plan to make a small scrapbook/portfolio filled with pictures, a bullet or two, printed certificate, and other things I may come across while on that venture. For the ride along I plan to bring in my copies of my authorization forms and hopefully a police report of a call I will respond to while on the ride along. Both of theses, of course, are in addition to adding the hours onto my Senior Project Hours Log.

3. Explain how what you will be doing will explore your topic more in depth.
I feel that by learning how to shoot and going to the training center would teach me how things are done first-hand and what this career requires. It would also teach me what newly hired agents are taught and a piece of the training they're put through. It would give me the state of mind needed when working the field. The ride along would do something similar however it would expose me to what happens when under pressure and when I'm actually in the situation live. Since I plan to do my ride along after learning how to shoot, I'm thinking it would give me an opportunity to adapt what I've learned to real life scenarios (to a certain extent of course).
